The Video Game Soda Machine Project

Konbini

Konbini is an indie vignette game that invites players to explore the narrator’s memories of an abandoned convenience store. Feed coins into the vending machine to hear the narrator reminisce about an especially memorable citrus drink. Here’s an even more minimalist take on the soda machine from the title screen…

Subway Surfers

In 2013, Subway Surfers introduced Tokyo as a limited-time destination in its World Tour mode. In these screenshots, Harumi surfs past a variety of soda machines.

Having never visited Tokyo myself, I can’t speak to the accuracy of the “one soda machine stacked on top of another” configuration.

Gungrave

How edgy is this screenshot from Gungrave, a third-person shooter for the PS2 starring a guy with a coffin full of guns chained to his back? So edgy that I almost overlooked the soda machines.

Rituals

I appreciate the minimalist low-polygon elegance of this soda machine from Rituals, a 3D Myst-’em-up set in a mysterious office building.

Thanks for the screenshots, Cornelius!

Zombie Panic! Source

Zombie Panic! Source isn’t messing around when it comes to soda machines! In fact, these brands are all instant classics. We have Dr. Zombo, Caliber .45, Crunk’O Cola, Pow!, Minty Zed, OMGAHD Gothic Soda, and Dr. Moe’s VITABR!AN. What more could you want from a game?

With this post, The Video Game Soda Machine Project has surpassed 1,800 soda machines. Thanks to everyone who has submitted entries along the way. Making it to 2,000 is starting to feel like a real possibility.
